Going in I decided to not watch anything but the teaser and avoid all information about the overall story. Let me tell you, it made this movie so much better. The way the story develops and turns blew me away, at first, thinking that the movie really faltered but quickly realizes it worked perfectly to tell the overall theme of the film. Yes, some of the characters could of been fleshed out better, and the story skims over major events pretty quickly but that had to be done to give you the entire storyline. It’s quite odd, now looking back, that this is being advertised as a heist film when that is only about a 15 minute portion. The actual story is much better and on a much grander scale.

Room 237 4/5

First off, The Shining is so fucking good that any documentary is arbitrarily going to be decent. This is pretty much the case with this movie. Most of the theories spoken are so fat-fetched that you are laughing half the movie. The ones that are serious and actually conceivable are the saving grace and let you see a whole nother perspective when viewing this masterpiece.

The Perks of Being a Wildflower 4/5

I hated the book and the people that incessantly talk about its’ greatness but the movie had me crying. I don’t know why but it did. Damn it.

5 Broken Cameras 5/5

One of the most thought provoking documentaries I’ve seen in quite some time. Showing a side of a story we are able to see much about. By the end you are amazed at what you were shown because of all the risk and trials this man was put through just to live on his land along with his people. I truly hope more people see this and somehow something can happen to help them.

Haywire 4/5

This movie was way more fun and overall great than I expected. I didn’t think Gino Carano was going to be able to carry a film but with great backing cast she proved me wrong. A great spy thriller to watch when bored.

Bernie 5/5

Linklater shows once again why he is a living legend at this point. No matter the story, actors, or style the end product is going to be solid. The dark humor throughout the movie is perfect especially when discussion a movie center on murder but feeling sorry for the murderer.

Antiviral 5/5

I went in with pretty low expectations since I wanted this to be like his fathers first few films and came away loving it. Yes, some of the acting is mediocre and the story could of be fleshed out a little more but the idea presented. Along with the world created in the dialogue is so fascinating that I didn’t want it to end.

The ABC’s of Death 4/5

Some of the shorts are absolute garbage while some are just so good you don’t want to end. I’m beginning to like the new trend in horror films to make a feature length film comprised of shorts. V/H/S is doing a great job, along with this. I hope the trend can continue so it gives new directors a chance to break out.

My Sister’s Sister 5/5

The twist is pretty obviously but doesn’t take away from a really great story that I haven’t seen a movie touch on ever. I like how it doesn’t explore much into the characters history but you can tell that history has changed who they are as a person and what they’re going through currently.

Birds of America 4/5

After much thought, this movie has grown on me. The performances are all pretty solid with Ben Foster shining the brightest. It takes the typical dysfunctional family movie and somehow manages to feel fresh while not really doing anything different.

The Bourne Legacy 3/5

The hate this movie got when released is unwarranted, it feels just like any of the previous Bourne movies with a better supporting cast. The chase sequences are choreographed perfectly and never get boring. Having Renner as the new Bourne was a great choice.

Flight 4/5

Denzel Washington carries the film on his back, what otherwise would be a pretty predictable movie. That is not necessarily a bad thing, as the movie keeps you watching with moments filled with drama and problems. Zemeckis makes a great return to the live-action movie genre, blending realistic CGI and actors beautifully. Don Cheadle does a great job in the scenes he is sparingly in. He is such an under-appreciated actor and I like his little nuances he brings to every role.

John Dies at the End 4/5

What an experience. A mix of comedy, horror, and sci-fi you never know what to expect next and are left wondering what exactly just happened. This is the type of film that has a very specific audience and that audience will devour this movie for years to come.

Zero Dark Thirty 5/5

I just want to start this off by saying I’m not basing my review off any of the politics or theories around this movie or the real events. I know tons of problems are swirling around the movie because of those things but I don’t want to express my opinions here about that.

A movie with an end almost everyone in the entire world knows but keeps you glued to the screen for almost 3 hours. That is an impressive feat that few could think to do but Kathryn Bigelow does it. Her pacing and direction gives the film a perfect balance between political thriller and war film by the end. You are shown scenes of heinous torture to acquire information towards finding this man and event the people purporting the actions are left feeling empty and abused. Their goal is to find this man. You are sent through this ten year journey shrouded by secrecy and miscommunication but in the end they find him.

Sinister 2/5

Ethan Hawke is the saving grace to this movie. About half way through you find out that it isn’t an actual killer orchestrating this but some supernatural being, which took me right out of the story. The movie consist of great tension and plot building up until that moment though. Some genuinely creepy sequences are shown via found footage Super 8 reels. If the movie showed greater success I wouldn’t of been surprised by sequels with how the movie is laid out/ends.

Django Unchained 5/5

Replacing an Native American Indian with an African-American Slave and making an epic western never seemed so brilliant. The original idea had been done a bunch of times in the 50s but with this fresh twist on this tale of revenge/love everything blends perfectly. Jamie Foxx does a great job mixing his charm, humor, and serious side but never comes off too corny. I still would of rather seen Michael K. Williams play the role. Quentin Tarantino has crafted another superb story with scenes filled with entertaining dialogue without distracting from the overall story. I’m interested in seeing what his final “rewriting history” film for the trilogy will be.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey 4/5

Peter Jackson once again decides to tackle Tolkien’s novels and do it with absolute perfection. Yes, you can’t view this movie as a whole story because if you do, you’ll be left expecting a lot more. The film shows Middle-Earth in even more detail, showing off areas of the world we only briefly saw or heard about. It is truly great to see places you saw in the Lord of the Rings series brought back to life in even greater detail. The only thing I see hindering this movie is that you can tell Peter Jackson chose the pacing based on the fact that it is now three films instead of just two like originally intended. The opening hour is really only saved by how great a Bilbo Martin Freeman is.

Also, I’ll state I didn’t see this in 48fps or 3D. I won’t see anything in 3D because it adds nothing to what I care about in movies. I am interested in seeing it in 48fps now though.

Dredd 4/5

Another remake or should I say reboot? The major difference between the original movie and this one is that they got a good writer and went over-the-top with the action. Which, is how it is suppose to be. The movie is brutal and violent in all the right ways. Plus the slow-mo drug creates some really interesting cinematography.

Skyfall 5/5

Sam Mendes has crafted a 007 picture through the lens of a Christopher Nolan TDK movie and it works perfectly. It is everything The Dark Knight Rises wanted to be and more. Javier Bardem once again proves why he is one of the best actors in the world even when not speaking his native language. Also, Roger Deakins does what he does best, makes every frame absolutely gorgeous

Cloud Atlas 5/5

I fell in love with this movie about 3/4th the way through. I was wondering how it would all make sense and why they wasted so much time on certain stories. Then magically it all made perfect sense, to the point I was left speechless. If you love movies, you have no reason not to support a film like this one. It pushes the boundaries of what mainstream Hollywood can do and will do. I now suspect because this film did so bad at the box office, when another direct tries to do something even remotely as ambitious as this, they’ll be laughed out of the country. It is a real shame because the editing, cinematography, and screenplay are fucking brilliant.
