The Avengers 5/5
This movie was everything I as hoping for with them finally making an Avengers movie. It combined all the heroes perfectly, each showing off their personalities to absolute perfection. Joss Whedon is the king of putting comedy in the right spots without ever over doing it.

Beyond the Black Rainbow 3/5
Visually, one of the greatest movies I’ve seen in a long time. It captures the 80s sci-fi feel perfectly. Also, the score is so damn good that I caught myself paying more attention to it than the acting most of the time. Which leads me to the most disappointing aspect of the movie. The story/screenplay, felt empty and without much meaning to it as a whole. Maybe after I re-watch it, I’ll be able to get more into it but after the first watch I walked away unhappy with the screenplay.

Cabin in the Woods 5/5

Such a refreshing take on the horror genre. I’ve seen this twice already and each time I enjoy it more. The film references in this are brilliant. I can only hope some people take notice and start writing screenplays like this one.

Taking a small break from writing anything here while I am moving to Chicago over the next week or so. I’ll still manage to see a few movies I imagine but won’t have time or feel like writing much about them till I get settled in. Thank you.

The first season does follow a lot of cliché, formulaic plot lines from various cop-dramas but the acting and something I can’t put my into words just grabbed me. The second season is near-perfect. Yes, it’s only four episodes but the writing is tight and well thought out, the story itself is addicting and the tension throughout is breathtaking. Idris Elba has given his best performance since playing Stringer Bell in The Wire. Maybe my guilty pleasure of cop-dramas has distorted my vision but all I know is that I love this show.

The Hunger Games 4/5

I think the best aspect of this movie was how they translated the break-neck speed the book did so well without making you feel lost. Obviously, some characters were fully developed as much as they were in the novel but it’s a adapted story, so it can’t be perfect. The action sequences were great even without much gore and violence on screen. Some of the performances were a little too over the top but Jennifer Lawrence did a great job with what she was given. I guess the director himself did the only thing he had to do correctly, not fuck it up.

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol 4/5

What a nice surprise for a franchise I’ve lost all interest in. Brad Bird’s direction really brought something unique to the film that truly helped overall. Also, Simon Pegg’s character never got tired or boring with his shtick, which happens a lot with characters like his in other movies. I am interested in seeing how Jeremy Renner takes over as the lead with the next movie with Tom Cruise aging.

Hugo 5/5

I postponed seeing this movie for fear that I wouldn’t like it, but alas, Martin Scorsese never disappoints. I went in knowing next to nothing about the plot or anything really. If I would of known that it focused on the films of Georges Méliès then I would of watched this the next it released. Also, Robert Richardson’s cinematography deserved the Oscar even over The Tree of Life.

Young Adult 5/5

Here is a movie that had Oscar buzz potential but somehow attracted none. I still don’t understand how that happened considering it is one of the best screenplays last year as well as one of the best overall films. The two leads are magnificent and really shows Patton Oswalt’s acting ever improving. (Even though he is basically playing himself) Charlize Theron, who always gives a great performance, continues her streak of being gorgeous, funny, while giving her characters such emotional depth that it’s insane she didn’t at least get a nomination this year. I connected with this film a lot more than I thought I would. By the end of the film, I was happy with how it got there and how she was going to move on from what just happened. If only I could do the same.

Brake 2/5
Take everything that was great about Buried and completely ruin it. That is this film in a nutshell. Stephen Dorff might be one of the worst actors that keeps getting roles somehow. Add in that you can see the double twist happening from almost the first 30 minutes, there is absolutely no pay off for wasting your time with this.
