The Place Beyond the Pines 5/5

Going in I decided to not watch anything but the teaser and avoid all information about the overall story. Let me tell you, it made this movie so much better. The way the story develops and turns blew me away, at first, thinking that the movie really faltered but quickly realizes it worked perfectly to tell the overall theme of the film. Yes, some of the characters could of been fleshed out better, and the story skims over major events pretty quickly but that had to be done to give you the entire storyline. It’s quite odd, now looking back, that this is being advertised as a heist film when that is only about a 15 minute portion. The actual story is much better and on a much grander scale.

Room 237 4/5

First off, The Shining is so fucking good that any documentary is arbitrarily going to be decent. This is pretty much the case with this movie. Most of the theories spoken are so fat-fetched that you are laughing half the movie. The ones that are serious and actually conceivable are the saving grace and let you see a whole nother perspective when viewing this masterpiece.

The Perks of Being a Wildflower 4/5

I hated the book and the people that incessantly talk about its’ greatness but the movie had me crying. I don’t know why but it did. Damn it.

5 Broken Cameras 5/5

One of the most thought provoking documentaries I’ve seen in quite some time. Showing a side of a story we are able to see much about. By the end you are amazed at what you were shown because of all the risk and trials this man was put through just to live on his land along with his people. I truly hope more people see this and somehow something can happen to help them.

Haywire 4/5

This movie was way more fun and overall great than I expected. I didn’t think Gino Carano was going to be able to carry a film but with great backing cast she proved me wrong. A great spy thriller to watch when bored.

Bernie 5/5

Linklater shows once again why he is a living legend at this point. No matter the story, actors, or style the end product is going to be solid. The dark humor throughout the movie is perfect especially when discussion a movie center on murder but feeling sorry for the murderer.

Antiviral 5/5

I went in with pretty low expectations since I wanted this to be like his fathers first few films and came away loving it. Yes, some of the acting is mediocre and the story could of be fleshed out a little more but the idea presented. Along with the world created in the dialogue is so fascinating that I didn’t want it to end.

The ABC’s of Death 4/5

Some of the shorts are absolute garbage while some are just so good you don’t want to end. I’m beginning to like the new trend in horror films to make a feature length film comprised of shorts. V/H/S is doing a great job, along with this. I hope the trend can continue so it gives new directors a chance to break out.

My Sister’s Sister 5/5

The twist is pretty obviously but doesn’t take away from a really great story that I haven’t seen a movie touch on ever. I like how it doesn’t explore much into the characters history but you can tell that history has changed who they are as a person and what they’re going through currently.

Birds of America 4/5

After much thought, this movie has grown on me. The performances are all pretty solid with Ben Foster shining the brightest. It takes the typical dysfunctional family movie and somehow manages to feel fresh while not really doing anything different.
